Attack ad avalanche!

The latest election porn, dropped off by our mail carrier today, consisted of four pieces, all vicious negative ads against candidates. One was from the camp of the feckless Multnomah County district attorney, Mikey Schmidt, who is apparently trailing challenger Nathan Vasquez in the polls. Last week, Mikey was running against Trump; this week, he's back to running against Betsy Johnson. Because Mikey's tough on guns! Sure. Sure he is.

Schmidt's problem is that he's really running against his own record as D.A., which is undeniably bad. But maybe he'll distract enough sheep by painting his opponent as a right-wing nut, when in actuality Vasquez is just a sensible centrist. Way more sensible and centrist than Mikey, anyway.

Next, I was a little surprised to see a straight-up attack ad aganst Shannon Singleton, who's running against Jessie Burke and Sam Adams for Sister Sushi Jayapal's old spot on the county commission. That mailer points out that Singleton has been involved with the worse-than-worthless "joint office" on homelessness that's burned through nine figures but only made the tent squalor in Portland worse. It's why I can't even think of voting for her. Go Burke.

The last two mailers took aim at Sister Sushi herself, now running for Congress. They rightly point out that under her "leadership," the county has become a drug-infested dump. "Let's not reward her for a record of failure." Amen to that.

Jayapal's opponent, Maxine Dexter, has denounced these flyers, which she says she had nothing to do with. Who's paying for them, then? A dark money group called "Voters for Responsive Government." Could it be Big Pharma, maybe?

Anyway, wow, what a negative load. And not a light moment in the whole pile. I miss "Who killed Packy?".

  1. Most right wing nuts are actually sensible and centrist. The Overton window has swung so far to the left that it's hard to recognize it in this country and especially in Oregon.

  2. Maybe it’s true that appointing a progressive DA to try to change the system from within is a largely lost cause or fools gold & the police union & media / gentrifying occupying army of weasels who want to buy low and then get the public to foot the bill to get the police people to chase people out/clean things up before they sell high is just too tough a nut to crack &/or attempt to do the bizarro more inverted utopian version of people opposed to their institutions previous mission appointed to it (Rick Perry or tillerson or Louis DeJoy to name a few?).

Maybe Mike is a better observer of data than public face?

But we know how the police union behaves and that won’t stop under Vasquez & city is on bad times for all kinds of reasons that aren’t singularly Schmidt’s fault?

The ‘emotional’ aspect of victims reading the Vazquez talking points in the O doesn’t sound all that good to me?

How about just basic competence & getting the police & paper pushers in the DAs office to handle the evidence & do their jobs honestly & competently at all first before we go for the emotional support angle from the lead DA & British style austerity where we either can’t afford / won’t pay for cops &/or they won’t do their jobs & the press stokes us all up on the emotional angle to be a bunch of Kevins/Vigilantes?

That doesn’t sound so good to me & sounds like more the slant of a Vasquez 24 year veteran of the department selling point.

I really don’t think Schmidt’s ‘the’ problem here?

As to left Overton window, that’s a joke; it’s the corporate business party either way & has been a steady slide for 40 years.

‘You’re all equals & more diverse in partners and colors, but you all get to struggle under the boot of the corporation and with ever less leverage’ is MO, no?

    2. Just another self-absorbed Portland SJW gazing at his/her navel and conjuring up visions about how bad the police are...and how Mikey is the one true choice. Nothing to see here folks.
