My pick for Multnomah County District 2 (updated)

Zaghloul.

In addition to electing a new county commission chair (rank Meieran first, JBE second, and do not rank Singleton), we here in District 2 of Multnomah County (north and northeast Portland) will also be electing a commissioner. Voting will be starting in a few days.

Name familiarity may make Serena Cruz a favorite, but to me she's been on the county payroll for too long, and look at the mess we're in. That said, I'm ranking her somewhere, maybe fourth third, because she's way better than a couple of her opponents, whom voters absolutely must not rank under any circumstances.

Those two are Bri Williams and Nathan Ong Norris, both backed by the wild socialistas who have the Portland City Council tied in knots. We need way less of that nonsense, not more.

So who besides Cruz can we rank? Hmmm, a guy named Nabil Zaghloul is endorsed by Sharon Meieran, my pick for county chair, and he looks like a capable man with his heart in the right place, and so I'm putting him in rank no. 1. Then there's Tony Robertson, who at least from the voters' pamphlet looks sane, and so I think I'll rank him no. 2. I may rank Herman Greene no. 3, although he looks like a longshot. That would leave Cruz as no. 4. 3.

If either of the do-not-rankers look like they might get elected, I might move Cruz up higher, because I think she's a likely winner among the acceptable players. But I'm tired of looking at her, to be honest.

Remember the simple days of primaries and runoffs? I sure do miss those. "Rank choice" is well-named. It's a solution in search of a problem.

Anyway, to sum up in Multnomah County District 2:

        Acceptable:  Zaghloul, Robertson, Greene, Cruz.

DO NOT RANK:  Williams, Norris, Greene.

UPDATE, 2 p.m.: An alert reader points out that Greene is one of the ex-school board members who personally cashed in on the sketchy Procedeo contract. Yuck! Of course, you should not rank anyone like that. Post revised accordingly.

  1. Yeah, I'm increasingly reluctant to vote for anyone from current/past elected office or who has been otherwise politically-connected, because, as you wrote, they had a part in making "the mess we're in".
Mr. Zaghloul does sound good, a fresh voice with relevant experience.
But Herman Greene would be a no-go for me, especially after the Procedeo "job" was reported ($6000. per month, to apparently do some lobbying for Procedeo, they're just calling it "consulting". You've probably got a post here about it). Does anybody know if he still has that "job"-? Because that would be pretty-cheeky to hang onto it while also running for public office.

  2. Greene is in the bag to the Albina Vision Trust, the racist bid for redeveloping an entire neighborhood and giving control of it to an unelected NGO. Beware. He was the inside-guy in AVT's "trade" of the public/socialist schools; massive Prophet Center--which no one on the Board of Education or administration wants to talk about...until after the election. Do not rank the rank.
