Zing along with Mitch
I see that Portland city council member and all-around windbag Mitch Green is really on the hot seat lately. Everywhere you turn, there's somebody trying to make sure that he loses his office in the upcoming election. Now some folks with money have set up a billboard to roast the guy, like they did with Portland's ex-district attorney, Mikey Schmidt.
And the other day someone dug up Twitter posts from Green's past, in which he expressed his "pure hatred" for the Portland police. Those posts have long since been taken down – everybody on the left (including me) fled Twitter when Elon Musk bought it and turned it into a Nazi platform – but hey, it's the internet. Green's old rants perisist in various archives.
Mitch, who's had his share of bad publicity lately, says he's still in favor of abolishing the police and prisons. And if that double-down is not bad enough to turn off the average voter, he's also telling little white lies about what went on on the streets of Portland back during the riots in 2020 and 2021:

Green: I would just say that I think it's not about me, it's not about (Portland Police Association president) Aaron Schmautz, it's not about Chief Day. It's about the tens of thousands of Portlanders who were brutalized by the Portland police in 2020. And so, you know, I'm perfectly willing to accept accountability for my old tweets, but... I'm intent on making sure that the police are accountable for their actions in 2020.
Wait. Tens of thousands of Portlanders were brutalized by the Portland police? The dude is just making stuff up now, for the cameras. That simply didn't happen.
The more you see of Mitch, the less you like. Voters in District 4 have a great alternative in Eli Arnold. They ought to rank Arnold, Clark, and Zimmerman in that order. Whatever they do, they should not rank Green anywhere. He needs to go wherever Mikey went.
Based on his email address on the OSB directory, Schmidt appears to be working for the Urban League.

DeleteYep, their address is still in the same building. I think it's possible that Mike Schmidt helped them work-out their complicated landlord issues when he came on-board, and they've been able to make it habitable again (the ground-floor offices, at least), and were able to stay.
DeleteGreen talks (& Tweets) like a wannabe radical anarchist, and then goes every night to his lovely home on a quiet cul de sac in the hills...When you look at the whole picture, the term 'limousine liberal' ('chardonnay socialist'-?) could come to mind.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as how the City Council 'uses your taxes' - the Portland Metro Chamber happily accepts & 'uses your taxes'. They supposedly use it to advocate for Portland's businesses, but considering how all-that's going, they should probably stop spending time & money on politics, and try doing their actual job.

DeleteHa ha, point taken. He's just pretty far-removed - geographically & otherwise - from what he advocates. And his wife works for Nike, for crap's sake. I know actual radicals. I don't know what Mr & Mrs Mitch are supposed to be.

DeleteI think many voters had (have) no idea how the ranked-choice system works. It seems have though the anti-DSA folks are getting that message out. Rank these three; don't rank anyone else.
ReplyDeleteYeah the idea that the "Summer of Love" was an organic uprising over those horrible deadly cops is laughable. It was pre-planned and financed by the people we should really be protesting over. Not sure if Portland got the free pallets of bricks strategically placed, but many cities did. And some of the "leaders" definitely got paid. And suddenly the ridiculous 6 foot distance rule went the way of the Dodo bird. Our city and state reps were all in on this nonsense too- never forget that.
ReplyDeleteMitch "I'm pretty" Green is typical of the fake liberal class- no lie is too big to sell a narrative. And if you look into what really went down with the St. Floyd saga, it is mostly a huge big lie. The chief of police lied on the stand to ensure a conviction and the mayor let the city burn down, while abandoning a police precinct, where they had to flee for their lives in dead of night. A local journalist created a documentary on the incident using a lot of police cam footage that showed clearly what went down. And if you haven't had enough, the Feds got the coroner to change his cause of death from an overdose to strangulation to sell the narrative to get the party started.
Here in PDX, the rioters also used frozen bottles of water, balloons filled with urine and feces to toss at law enforcement. Reminder to folks who think when a business gets damaged, insurance will pay for the fix up until police declare a riot.

DeleteThe net effect of this is that Mitch will be re-relected. He waffled enough on his X-posts to keep legacy media chilled, but the true believers got the wink-wink/nod-nod in his strategic skin-back. After all, a main tenant of the revolution is to keep the establishment guessing and fake it 'till you make it. All he needs is 25% of the electorate who agree with Mitch. They will vote. He will win. The true villain in all this is the radical city charter, which passed in a landslide, as you'll recall.

Sadly, if any of these 6 DSA councilors fails to get reelected it will just be dumb luck. With the 25 percent threshold to get reelected their name recognition alone will be enough to carry the day.

DeleteYeah, you know, sometimes you hate to be right about these things, but that Charter is the complete disaster that many of us out-here in the real world said it would be.
DeleteAnd yes, they wrote it so it takes twice the votes ("the majority of voters") to recall them as it did to get themselves elected. There was some controversy about that when it was first completed, but I just looked & I see they still haven't changed it. Go figure.

I think we need tio stop bemoaning the charter – it's not going away any time soon – and deal with it. In this case, Green is going to win if the voters who want him out split their votes among all the other bobbleheads on the ballot. In this case, those voters need to do two things: (1) not rank Green, and (2) rank Arnold highly.
