Granddad puts his foot down

After a badly received public "conversation" in which most of those present were silenced, Portland's mayor, Keith Wilson, has announced that the statue of Abraham Lincoln will be restored on its original pedestal in the South Blocks, rather than lowered to the ground because woke. Wilson's announcement was in direct contradiction of the city's parks bureaucracy, which seemed just the day before to be adamant that the statue, which was toppled and damaged by vandals six years ago, should be repositioned so as to tell a story of a supposedly noble modern "uprising" against oppression. Part of the parks department's motivation was also to penalize Lincoln, who freed the slaves and saved the nation, for not also reversing centuries of murderous hatred of native Americans.

To those of us who were actually around in 2020 and watched on Twitter the "indigenous night of rage" that included the destruction of the statue, the idea of somehow honoring the fools who trashed the city that summer and fall is particularly offensive. The Lincoln statue, and quite a few others, were wrecked by a roving band of psychotic people who were using the death of George Floyd as an excuse to break stuff. The bars were closed – everything was closed, due to Covid – and many young white Portlanders took to the streets to "protest" in large part because there was nothing else to do. In their midst were a few of the usual lunatics who seized the opportunity to destroy property, any property, because it felt good. The one guy was a Reed student, and a faculty brat at that.

Anyway, the decision to put Abe back on the pedestal, rather than fight it out in court and in the media with historic preservationists, seems like a flex by Wilson against the arrogant brats in the city bureaucracy. If so, bully for him, although I still think he's a strange guy.

But it wasn't such a great moment for deputy city administrator Donnie Oliveira. Apparently he was the highest ranking city official at the absurd public "conversation" earlier in the week, and the decision to chuck the parks department's restoration plan sure looks like Oliveira and his people were overruled by Wilson. But hey, that's the least of Donnie's problems. He answers directly to the comical new city manager, Raymond Lee. Oliveira's next height issue may well be how high his own severance payment should be set.

  1. The real loser was Eric Fredericksen, the public art administrator of the City of Portland Office of Arts & Culture, who called the vandalism/riot an "uprising" at the whatever-the-hell-it-was on Tuesday.
Frederickson said that Abe wouldn't go anywhere until 2027, although the city has had six years to do repairs. So Wilson's crowd-pleaser is essentially meaningless without some deadline for the city bureaucrats to get off their asses. Expect that "technical challenges" and patina will be employed to keep the result of the "uprising" in storage. Along with the other statues that no one wants to talk about. And won't it be fun if someone suggests that The Oregonian's first publisher, Harvey Scott, should be restored? His paper has already branded him a hopeless racist, using the progressive's favorite tool-- retroactive morality--to damn him for all time. We predict thundering anti-Scott editorials.
    The laughs ain't over yet.

  2. The bureaucrats and politicians in Portland haven’t noticed what happened to a woke company in Beaverton.

    1. Meh. Nike's problems are not wokeness. They're consumer fatigue and bad-boy management. And nothing Nike has done comes anywhere close to roasting Abraham Lincoln. You may want to ask your doctor to check you for Obama Derangement Syndrome.

    2. Due respect, Jack, a substantial (not entirely, but substantial) part of Nike's problems are directly traced to alienating a significant portion of their consumer base. In addition to the disastrous decisions of their former CEO in the past few years, their pissing off 40%+ of the American consumer and their obsequious pandering to China, many of their perceived "woke" stances are directly responsible for their lack of growth.
You attribute their decline to "Consumer Fatigue". Where does the Consumer Fatigue come from, though? Instead of focusing on being a great sporting goods and apparel company, Nike decided to get political and chose sides in cultural disagreements Nike's downfall is going to be a great Harvard Business Review case study in how to decimate a brand and destroy shareholder value.

    3. Ugh. You really need to turn off Fox News and Lars Larson. You are smarter than this. MAGA backlash has little to do with Nike's decline. But if it makes a nice story for you, continue to go with it.

  4. An incredible amount of City Staff time & resources have been spent on StatueGate, it would be enlightening to have someone calculate that (so far)...
And I'm wondering - what is / was RACC's role in how this played-out-?
If our 'Strange Grandad' got fed up with their sh!t & then took control of the Lincoln situation, I'd like to think he's also now seeing that they're more of a costly hindrance than anything else.

(And to the complainers about the Arts Tax, now would be a good time to question the City's need for it, when they're spending it on this ridiculousness - https://www.portland.gov/help/contact-elected-official )

  7. And on top of this nonsense, they are talking again about rebuilding the “Historic” Albina District 65 years after the fact.. Does the “historic” label only apply to certain people in this town, or does Abe Lincoln count anymore?
