Polls take their toll

The O found some money in the sofa cushions recently for some polls of Portlanders, or at least one poll on numerous subjects. Today we learn that public sentiment is clearly against using the city's goofy "green" sales tax money to improve the perfectly good Trail Blazer palace. Yesterday I think it was, we learned that even more voters think that the current City Council stinks, and that the mayor is only slightly better.

Not so clear is what the public is going to do about any of it. Half the city council is up for re-election in November in another of one of those ludicrous "rank choice" throwdowns. I'm afraid the electorate is going to see how hard it is to get rid of the worst of the council under that system. In the meantime, everyone at City Hall gets to sweat a little. Good. They're not used to that.

  1. "Rank choice voting" will ensure that the current occupants of clowncil seats will remain in them for life. That's what Ms Avalos and her colleagues had in mind when they designed it. "Braindead Dan" Ryan saw that writing on the wall very early.

  2. I was just reading that too, and as The O noted, the polling also showed that a solid-number of them also stated that they'd approve of the PCEF money being used for parks, public safety, etc. - things where the Council has cut funding.
This was a clear message about the direction this Council has been going, and how their priorities differ from a majority of the voters'.
What this Council will do with that information remains to be seen, of course.

  3. You've got to wonder why the poll didn't ask people what they think of the quality of legacy journalism in town.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog2@gmail.com and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
