“Just turn around and not look"
I was checking the men’s pro basketball schedule last night – the Trail Blazers have at least two games left, and at least one at home – when I noticed how many of the games are being telecast only on Prime Video. Hmm, I thought, to watch basketball on TV now, you have to pay Jeff Bezos.
It’s the same thing if you want to read the Washington Post. It’s the same thing if you want to walk to the old Nature’s grocery store. And forget any other form of bricks-and-mortar retail. If you don’t want to drive, park, and then go find the empty spot on the shelf where the item you want used to be (or the empty building where the store used to be), you have to pay Jeff Bezos.
Maybe this is getting out of control, I thought. Maybe I ought to take the younger set’s advice and stop using Amazon for everything.
Then today a friend sent me a link to this absolute horror story, about a death in the Amazon warehouse in Troutdale, just outside of Portland. A worker keeled over, and according to the story, his co-workers were ordered to let him die, rather than stop “fulfilling” orders and help him. The stricken employee did not make it.
That, my friends, is pure, pure evil.
I remember as a kid hearing my elders explain that when construction workers fell into the concrete being poured for the bases of the Pulaski Skyway, they didn’t stop pouring. There was a plaque somewhere with the dead men’s names on it. But that was 95 years ago. And at least the skyway is still there. The guy in Troutdale died so that somebody's zit cream could get delivered on a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday.
Where are the labor regulators? We know the Cabinet secretary is too busy “fulfilling” other needs, but what about the supposedly pro-labor State of Oregon? It really is time to bring the chrome-dome oligarch and his ilk down a few pegs, for all our sakes.

Not bragging. When Bezos took the WaPo, urged everyone to stop using Amazon. Used to give A-cards for B-day presents, then stopped. Folks chuckled and said, "Huh?" Bezos dumped his wife, MacKenzie Scott who stood with him during the early 2000's when Amazon was a rain forest south of here. Really "Went Off" when he axed the pro Kamala editorial. Then, what was it Jack? A couple BILLION (in Italy) for the adulterer to marry (what, or who, ELSE?) a TV news anchor. Yesterday under the threat of WW3, the "Newspaper of Record" the NY Times does a kiss-ass feature about wife #2 and how she thinks (HAHAHAHA) we aren't happy enuf or some such gobbledeygook shit........a TV news anchor who THINKS? Those folks either died or retired (ala Portland) some years back. Kathy Smith and Mike Donahue come to mind...quickly. (and so do MANY others). However, the "horror story" at the warehouse is an indictment of Bezos and his outrageous and inhumane policies...and Bezos himself as a human being. (that ASSUMES the jerk IS human). Sooo where is the DA and/or AG? One of the two or both should file murder charges against that goddamnsonofabitch.
ReplyDeleteWe've made it all the way back to the sweatshops of the turn of the century, where "you're lucky to have a job" is in vogue. The new gilded age of only two classes, rich or poor. We had it good for a while because they needed us after WWII destroyed much of Europe and Asia's industrial base. But not no more.
ReplyDeleteI recently revived a song about being stuck in the past and longing for the simpler days of yore: https://youtu.be/5GJIL9hOyXE
America's pre-eminent investigative journalist right now is Pablo Torre. He's currently got Adam Silver tied in knots over Steve Ballmer's salary camp circumvention scheme. He cost the head of the NFL Players' Association his job and had a hand in the resignation of the MLB Planers' Union. He recently exposed exposed a scheme by the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies to sell embargoed technology to the Russians for use in Ukraine. The dude is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, last week he described himself as a Lina Khan Democrat. That's now my north star for evaluating any politician. Are they a Lina Khan Democrat?
