They get it


The city council of Oakland, California hardly looks like a right-wing group to me. And yet even they have figured out that their "defund the police" strategy is just going to prolong the gun homicide crisis that's gripping their city.

They just reversed course and are now funding two new police academies to get more cops on the street as quickly as they can.

Maybe their new academies will teach the cops how to be good cops. Maybe they will attract city residents who share the community's backgrounds and values. One can hope.

I used to think of Oakland as a rough place compared to Portland. But while they have 100 homicides down there so far this year, Portland is not too far behind with 65. 

I hope Portland commissioner Dan Ryan sees the light in time to save his budding career as a politician. He'll be up for relection in May.
