Not dark yet, but it's getting there

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal is in the United States getting ready for the U.S. Open, and it's not going well.  At a prelim tournament in D.C. this week, he was eliminated by Lloyd Harris, after Nadal had barely squeaked out a win against Jack Sock. Neither Harris nor Sock are exactly household names.

I watched most of the Sock match (no pun intended), and by the end, the 20-time majors champion from Spain was hobbling around, apparently on a bad foot. He's also hampered by his age, of 35 years. He skipped Wimbledon. Father Time is undefeated.

It's hard to see Nadal winning the U.S. Open. He is the fiercest competitor out there, a phenomenal athlete, and one of the greatest practitioners of mind over matter you'll ever see. But he'll be up against the very best in New York, and he can't go all the way on one leg.

He'll probably have the crowd on his side at the U.S., with the many Djokovic haters really riled up after Djoker's shabby exit from the Olympics. But if somebody's going to take that evil villain out, it will probably have to be one of the kids, like the one who did him in in Tokyo.
