A breather

It's been a peaceful 10 days or so here in Portlandia. The tighty righties and the avengers of all social wrongs apparently celebrate the holidays, just like so many normal people do.

Here it is New Year's Eve, and the Pioneer Courthouse Square tree is still standing. I'm pleasantly surprised.

I wish we could take this quiet moment and build on it. Figure out what it would take to get the demonstrators on both sides to stop the violence and do something constructive.

There must be some common ground. It seems like we may be standing on it right now.

UPDATE, later that morning: Ahem. It appears that this post was a day late. The crapshow kicked back up again last night. More here.
