Much ado
The flow of election porn has begun for another year here at Blog Central. This week we got a flyer from our illustrious representatives in Salem. The House members are up for re-election this year; the senator, not until 2028.
What struck me most about this mailer is how, despite all the printed words, the three politicians in question uniwttingly proved that they have spent the last couple of years doing nothing – literally nothing – that is of any interest to me. And if truth be told, little of anything, period.
They don't bother to throw even a small bone to homeowners and working middle-class families. You know, the people who pay all the taxes. It's all about the nonprofits, the wronged minorities, the low-income people, and especially the undocumented immigrants. Not that those aren't important constituents to look after, but why don't the rest of us matter, even a little bit?
It's quite a statement about Portland politics these days that folks like these have a guaranteed seat in the Legislature for life. If this flyer's contents are all they have to brag about, the state is going nowhere fast.
At least we taxpayers didn't paid for the "report." It says it was produced at the expense of these characters' campaigns. Which is as it should be. And now, off to the recycling bin it goes.
Notice what they consider accomplishments is spending other people's money.

ReplyDeleteAny talk about being defenders of the working-class is absolute bullsh!t when it comes from anybody who voted for that.
No one else in local media is doing routine "What Did They DO?" coverage. And most progressive Portlanders can't be bothered to do their homework to read that sort of coverage. And then no one (who isn't willing to spend the bucks) will run against these clowns. Which is why they have lifetime sinecures, unless they trip up with the unions or NGOs. This is how political machines rule--and have since the beginning of the republic. Nothing to worry about: if they haven't accomplished anything, they haven't screwed stuff up. Much.
ReplyDeleteHas anybody ever considered the carrying capacity of the state and country's resources, like electricity, water, food, jobs, housing, transportation, and public facilities (schools/hospitals/etc)? Can we really support more and more people, especially on the poor end, coming here and using more and more resources? I have never, or very rarely, heard this conversation from our local government. It's as if there is no limit- a bounty of riches that never runs dry. And to add massive irony to this question is that there is lots of discussion about too many humans taking up too many resources, but on a planetary scale. But you can't talk about that on a local scale cause that would be calling out the obvious problem with massive "immigration"- there is only so much pie to carve up. But who the hell cares about logic anymore? It's all about feelings.
ReplyDeleteWater-supply forecasting should be guiding any decisions about new growth, IMO. Look at the eastside - Bend & that area keeps allowing new development, and at the same time there's a declared drought crisis & farms that grow our food are having to restrict water usage. As you said, common sense isn't involved in these decisions, but it's not about "feelings", it's about money.
