More mission creep for Metro

The chief bobblehead on the board of Metro, Portland's needless layer of government, admits that the original purpose of his agency is now obsolete. It was created to oversee the build-out of the Portland suburbs, which is now complete. But rather than putting in motion a dismantling of Metro, he wants to find new reasons for it to exist.

In the June interview, [Juan Carlos] Gonzalez discussed his priorities for Metro, but he also spoke about wanting to reorient the culture of the agency. Asked to elaborate on that, he said Metro’s original mission was simply to manage growth, but with the region seeing less growth lately, the agency needs to evolve.

“That for us means developing new muscles to create opportunity for our small businesses to thrive, for people to be able to afford to buy homes, to not just have a high quality of life but to have clear opportunities, a clear value proposition for what it means to be an Oregonian and what it means to raise a family or retire in Greater Portland,” he said. “I think those are fundamental questions that we need to throw everything at.”

Egad. "New muscles." Make up your own joke.

No, Juan, the agency needs to wind down, give its functions back to counties and cities, and dissolve. And sell the infernal zoo and that white elephant of a convention hotel!

Then again, I'm not too worried about Gonzalez's weird vision becoming a reality. One would expect him to go back now to his real job, funneling public money to construction companies, government employees, unions, and nonprofits. As we all know, Metro bobbleheads are supposed to keep such a low profile that no one can name them.

  1. 100% Jack! Just like PDC/Prosper Portland, Metro needs to go away, permanently. Their time, if there ever was a legitimate time for these two agencies, has come and gone. They do nothing but suck tax dollars into middle management jobs that are duplicated at local levels, and they do a worse job at it too. Create a permanent trust for the zoo or create a non-profit and let it run on its own merit. No more zoo bonds with vague threats of dead elephants if the suckers...er, taxpayers, don't fund another multi-million dollar bond, "for the animals."

    1. I totally disagree....I think Metro should expand it's reach to what is truly metropolitan in nature, as all our challenges do not stop at each city's edge.. It is Multnomah County that should go away. 95% of its population is already in Portland or Gresham, and between the city (when it gets better organized) and Metro, those services can be absorbed. There are examples of city/county consolidation everywhere in the US. Multnomah County has shown us they are unnecessary, but Metro has real benefit.

  2. A conservative would say. “When a government agency has completed is purpose. It should be dismantled.”

Gonzalez posted an apology video on the clock app this weekend. Seems in the process of bragging about building Portland's first botanical garden, he came to learn Portland already had one for over fifty years. I left a comment about how the bureaucrats should spend some time east of 52nd. His reply started with "I grew up in Forest Grove..." before the preview cut him off. Dude's a piece of work.

  4. SO much of our problem is continually recycling the same politicians & officials. The same people who created this corrupted cluster-f**k are not going to be the ones to fix it.
And look who Gonzales just hired as his Chief of Staff, a former head of Prosper Portland (who had to resign from that job last year). https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2025/06/embarrassed-for-our-city-prosper-portland-boards-fissure-with-city-hall-widens-amid-leaders-controversial-exit.html

  5. Is there a legal way to create a petition and let the citizens vote on it? Ending Metro would be a good start to making the city somewhat affordable. At least change the name from Metro to Must-Go...

    1. The best (and funniest) way to abolish Metro, would be a statewide initiative petition. It'd be hilarious to force the Metro folks to campaign in Medford.

  6. Not to be petty, but Juan Carlos Gonzalez has packed on about 40 pounds since joining the Metro council.
