Actually, the Blazers' arena has been renovated plenty
Amid all the noise about whether public money should be the only money spent on a proposed renovation of the Moda Center arena, a falsehood keeps being repeated, and it's time somebody called it out. The oligarch Blazer owners reaching their hands toward the taxpayers' wallets keep saying (and the lazy media keep repeating it) that the building has never been renovated. That's not true. It hasn't been renovated enough for the fat cats' liking, but at least a couple of rounds of improvements have been made.
When Paul Allen's company that originally owned the building, Oregon Arena Corporation, filed for bankruptcy in 2004, the arena was transferred to the bankers holding the mortgage. Those creditors (headed by the TIAA pension fund) formed a company called Portland Arena Management (PAM), and it controlled the arena from early 2005 until Paul Allen bought it back in 2007.
Allen was looking to renegotiate the mortgage, and he failed. The creditors successfully called his bluff. The Blazers also went looking for city money at the time. "The economic model is broken," they told then-Mayor Tom Potter. Potter smiled and wisely showed them the door.
Anyway, during the PAM era, the Rose Garden, then just over a decade old, underwent what everyone back then was calling a major renovation. The work reportedly totaled about $15 million and was managed by Global Spectrum, which operated the building on behalf of PAM. Taking inflation into account, $15 million spent in 2006 represents $25 million today.
Here's one description of the work that was done:
The renovations focus primarily on revamping the 200-level club lounge, which had sported a Mexican-themed decor. Now designed with more of a nightclub feel, the premium-level lounge features bamboo wood floors, stainless steel drink rails with granite counter tops, cushioned benches along the walls, suspended wood ceilings, new dining stations and dozens of flat-panel TVs.
The upgrades include two 60-foot-long bars with walnut veneer, granite counter top and five multi-tap beer pouring stations.
The club level was not the only area to be renovated. The 70 luxury suites were outfitted with new wallpaper, carpeting and flat-panel TVs as well, said Jeff Rhinevault, director of facility services for Global Spectrum.
The courtside lounge, previously about 900 square feet, was expanded to about 3,000 square feet and offers a view out into the corridor where the visiting team will walk past on its way to the court.
Other arena renovations included a new signage ring around the arena and less visible fire alarm, security and lighting upgrades.
When Allen took the arena back in 2007, another $13 million set of upgrades was announced. As I recall, these included a state-of-the-art "jumbotron" and other new displays, and improvements to a restaurant, suites, the concourse, and the basketball floor. In 2026 terms, it's another $21 million.
I'm up to $46 million in renovations, and counting. I'm sure there has been more, but nobody's looking for it. It doesn't fit the narrative.
Okay, the improvements I'm talking about here were made 20 years ago, and they were not nearly in the ballpark of what's being proposed now. But they were more than maintenance – way more. To say the building has never been renovated is just false.
So stop saying it.
The other thing that occurs to me is how convenient it would be for the Blazers if there could be an incident somehow showing that there's a safety issue in the building. The cynic in me is just waiting for that to happen.

Dundon went full “I’ve already done enough for you people” during his PR appearance yesterday. That dude is as tone deaf as they come.
ReplyDeleteI was inclined to cut the check because the place DOES need to get fixed-up. But if he’s not going to at least say ‘thank you’, then he can eff right off to Vegas.
Speaking of, someone made an interesting point the other day when talking about bringing MLB and the NBA down there. MLB believes they’re going to draw 7,000 tourists per game there. I suspect the NBA is making a similar pitch. As though I’m going to fly down to see my team play there on a random Tuesday night in February. People do that to see their team play the Raiders. They won’t for their baseball team.
So let him go. Let him compete directly against the Golden Knights.
Does it need $600K worth? (And that's probably a liar's budget.) Indexed for inflation, the place cost $585 million to BUILD.
DeleteTime for a wrecking ball. Memorial Coliseum should provide all the event space needed in that area.
ReplyDeleteThe current rhetorical pillow fight over the Blazer renovation proposal misses the more important reality that the once “fringe and laughable” gang of local socialists/commies are now fully in control of Portland and are delirious with excitement over the Mandami team blowing out 7 Democrat INCUMBENTS this week in our nation’s largest city after Seattle elected a truly clueless Socialist mayor last year and LA will likely elect a radical Socialist mayor in November. Anyone who thinks this city council will roll over for a Texas billionaire who is arrogantly demanding public funding from a “climate change” fund just doesn’t understand the intoxication of power these radicals are enjoying. The revolution has never been this close to toppling western civilization and they are just getting warmed up……
ReplyDeleteUsed to go to Blazer games. Kinda liked the team. Even during the jail blazer episodes. Hated the uncomfortable seats.
ReplyDeleteLost interest in the sport about a decade ago. So, I don’t really care about the remodeling pillow fight.
I've never been to a Blazer game...not really into sports that much. I don't live in Portland so the "pillow fight" is wonderful entertainment from where I sit in the cheap(er) seats...
ReplyDeleteDid anybody watch the City Council work session that was happening at the same time as the Chamber/Dundon dog-&-pony show-?
ReplyDeleteThe whole session was about the Moda, and a startling revelation was that nobody had mentioned to the Council something that's in the current lease (and none of them had read it-?!) -
"Rip City continues to have responsibility for operating Moda Center, funding and completing capital repair, maintenance, and improvement projects and maintaining the arena in a first-class manner."
Novick was shocked, there was discussion about exploring legal action.
As you're saying here, BoJack, there's a LOT of conflicting info out there. And with media not exactly clarifying things, plus the Council hadn't even bothered to read the lease until now...
(I'll post that link in a sec) - here's the lease - https://www.portland.gov/wheeler/documents/moda-center-bridge-agreement-fact-sheet/download
Novick - at around 2:40:00 - https://www.portland.gov/auditor/council-clerk/events/2026/6/24/city-council-work-session
DeleteMost of them can't read past the 4th grade level. See Jane run and Timmy kick the ball.
DeleteThe counsel members and the local media staff have a lot in common.
DeleteAll this talk about Vegas being a great destination is losing steam fast. The amount of people going to Vegas to hang has dropped off a cliff. Nothing is free any more, including parking. They charge outrageous prices for just about anything now and people just don't have that much extra cash any more. Plus the suits decided they only wanted to cater to the high rollers, but that is a fickle and tiny crowd. With a likely long-term drought cycle happening again, it is going to get even more stressed to survive.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone thinks that Moda is a big deal controversy, check out the latest PDX.Real Instagram report on the big anti-Moda demo, complete with pre-printed (in handwriting!) posters with typical commie slogans. There were probably more socialist pols there than citizens, and nobody looked very excited.
ReplyDeleteNothing anyone has said, pro or con, has anything to do with the actual issues embedded in the "doom loop;" and none of the latte revolutionaries have any idea what to do to turn this town into a socialist paradise, since they lack (for the time being) the muscle to put class traitors up against the wall. I would bet that Angelita and Candy and Mitch and Teacher Tiffany all dream of setting up a People's Guillotine on Pioneer Square as they drift off into dreamlane.
What about Insane Sameer & Chairman Jamie? Don't they get to join the "off the bourgeoisie" party?
