All along the injured coast
It's been unspeakably depressing to watch the goons in the 21st Century Republican Party dismantle most of our country's great institutions. It's gotten so bad that I've had to stop writing about it.
But I never thought I'd see the day when their poison would spread to the Oregon Coast. That's truly sacred ground for so many of us, and far enough out of the way that you'd think it would be spared. But now they're preparing to defile it, as they have so many other places. The situation merits at least a few words.
It seems that the heavies who are pulling the strings in the White House have decided that the Coast Guard will be the next set of troops annexed into Orange Caligula's Gestapo. They're probably in the process of rewriting the duties of the service men and women who save lives along the coastline, putting them to work instead on the terrible missions of breaking up immigrant families and harassing all who would question Dear Leader.
Then there is the imminent stationing of border patrol jackboots in and around Lincoln County. The White House flunkies are actively looking for places to put hundreds of them up for at least a year. And they're scouting acreage for some sort of installation that will no doubt include a detention camp.
Some of the locals are pushing back, but there's a lot of poverty in that part of the state, not to mention gun nuts and other MAGA loyalists. And so it's not unlikely that our tin pot dictator will find someone desperate enough, cruel enough, dumb enough, or some combination thereof, to take the bait. Sadly, the cabal in charge of America will probably get the toehold they seek on our beautiful beaches amd estuaries. It will be a tragedy beyond measure to see that area marred so obscenely by the ugliness that is Trumpism. Let's hope that no one gets killed, at least.

ReplyDeleteMy dad moved to Waldport a few years ago. He spends his days alternating between watching the tide come in and out and devouring every frame offered on Britbox. I went over to take him to his favorite meal of the year on Thanksgiving, the buffet at Inn at Spanish Head. The whole drive and most of the meal was a monologue about ICE coming to Newport. He's identified two hundred-plus room establishments that are currently shuttered which would be perfect for this operation. As you point out, there's not much work over there, so bringing them back online wouldn't be too difficult. Getting people to clean rooms and make beds may be a different story.

There's a hearty group of locals who meet every Saturday at the corner where Highway 20 ends its journey from Boston. Sometimes it's just a few, sometimes it's well over a dozen. But they're there with signs and horns and good spirits. They're all there to protest Him. I expect them to get loud if and when the Gestapo show up.
Lincoln County might be the craziest of all Oregon's 36. The drugs, the poverty, the weather. They all play a part. They're nuts and most of them LOVE Trump, or at least loathe Democrats. If there's one thing that unites them though it's their disdain for outsiders. This is gonna bring them ALL into the streets. Woe unto whoever shows up.
Lincoln County is 100% not MAGA. Hasn’t voted for a GOP President since Reagan and went 57% for Kamala in 2024.
