Big time

Just when I have lost faith in the New York Times, they quote me in an article on estate tax avoidance by the uber-wealthy. Maybe they're not so bad after all. At least for today.

  1. And the rich get way richer by avoiding all those pesky taxes!
    And congratulations on the mention!

  2. The old Law360 trick … cite a lawyer to encourage a subscription.

  3. I’ve always felt that the NYT’s news contact in Portland was an active reader of Jack’s blog. Conformation that Jack sees the news without being confused by the flak.

  4. There’s nothing wrong with using legal means to avoid paying 1c more than you have to. Rich or not. We all do it!

    1. Well, it helps if your class is rich enough to buy the legislatures to write the tax laws you want so you don't have to evade taxes illegally. Let's hear it for the 1031 conversion and stepped-up basis protecting those capital gains!

  5. Congratulations. This ranks up there with your SCOTUS mention.

  7. Pretty cool actually!

But they are still a horrible “news” organization for the most part.

    1. In all seriousness; please get a grip. We live in the most amazing country, where opportunities are more abundant than at any time in history. Even those of modest means live better than wealthy people 100 years ago. Aside from the truly mentally ill, or mentally handicapped, anyone can make it in this country and live better than the top 1% of people on this planet. People's skewed expectations drive so much jealousy ("someone's doing better than me; evidence that the system's rigged"). The f'ng whining has got to stop. You've won the worldwide ovarian lottery. Be thankful you weren't born a Mongolian sheep herder. I wish you good fortune.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
