Mikey the Goldbrick

Here's an interesting piece that seems to drift in and out from behind the Paywall of Pity at the O. On top of everything else, it appears Multnomah County's feckless D.A., Mike Schmidt, doesn't show up at the office much.

Schmidt touts his policy work and ties to Salem to push for changes that he argues make the criminal justice system more equitable. He spends considerable time meeting with a wide range of local and state leaders, as well as attending public events....

The Oregonian/OregonLive asked for data on how often each had swiped their work badge at the courthouse to access their sixth-floor offices. The newsroom also looked at Schmidt’s calendar to see how he spent his time.

The data, which covered a recent six-month period, shows Schmidt clocked into the office about 60% of the time...

For comparison, the news organization also analyzed entry data for Washington County District Attorney Kevin Barton and Clackamas County District Attorney John Wentworth over the same period: September to February.

Both reported to work in person more often than Schmidt with Barton coming into the office about 80% of the time and Wentworth 91%...

In September and October, Schmidt took three work trips out of state, according to his calendar, traveling to San Diego, Washington, D.C., and Toronto for conferences on progressive prosecution and a specialty court for homeless defendants.

The guy can't be bothered with the business of actually prosecuting anybody. He's too busy trying to out-Vega Jessica Vega. Man, the sooner we get that dude out of that office, the better. Next year he can go to San Diego on his own dime.

  1. “ Next year he can go to San Diego on his own dime.”

    …and stay there.

  2. One of the persistent problems of politicians is that they seek positions, not jobs.

    1. Silly me. I thought the role of a "prosecutor" (i.e., District Attorney) was to protect the public's interests against people charged with crimes. The election of Mike Schmidt has been another example of Portland leading the way in the complete breakdown of effective government. If he loses the next election, that'll be another small step toward turning this thing around.

    3. Any more, a district attorney gig in a populous county is a stepping stone to running for mayor of the city in that county, statewide, or Congress.

Gone are the days of having a district attorney with the same name for 10 years.

  4. I bet you anything he didn't ride public transportation in Toronto that has become a very dangerous way to get around. Toronto used to be a very cool international city, but alas has been turned into another hell hole by the same dark money we are up against.

  5. Progressive Prosecution? More like all hands off prosecution. Boy, these people sure do live in bubbles.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
