True colors

The new speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is quite a character. Way out there with the constant Bible thumping, he's an election denier, an anti-vaxxer, and a fervent warrior on all the culture fronts, especially the ones in your bedroom and in any uterus you may have.  A smooth lawyer hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, he's been in Congress less than seven years and has never chaired a Congressional committee.

But he got the votes he needed, including that of Oregon's own Lori Chavez-DeRemer (pictured) from down in what used to be Schraderland. She may pass as "moderate," but let's face it, she's still a Republican. And not a single member of that party's rogues' gallery voted no on Johnson.

The Oregon Democrats will try to crucify Chavez-DeRemer over this, but unless they can come up with a better candidate than they did last time around, I doubt that it will get them anywhere. Apparently the machine is backing Janelle Bynum from Clackamas, who once defeated LCD in a race for the state House of Representatives. But the new federal House district is a different story, and LCD scored at least a few "centrist" points busting Jim Jordan's chops in the speaker's race.

Anyway, welcome America back to the next-higher level of gridlock. That frayed and tattered piece of paper over there on the floor is the Constitution.

  1. Flyover country got one of their own. It’ll be interesting to see how the coastal elites respond.

  3. I know you're warm on Bynum, but I believe she's the real deal. Can she take down LCD? I guess we'll see. I believe the House GOP is in for a rinsing in the next election, especially if Johnson shuts the government down. Bynum could catch that tide and move along to Washinton.

Franky, I'd rather see her in Mahonia Hall.

    1. I saw somewhere that Johnson is planning to pass a bill that will keep the 'mint open into next year, so that the Dems can't force the MAGAs to vote on a year-end Christmas tree bill. Once again the internal rules of Congress will control everything. The Founding Fathers knew there would be clowns, but there was only so much they could do to fence them in.

  4. Constitution in tatters? Hardly. This how our constitutional system is supposed to work.

    1. Founding Father: We must always have an electoral college and two senators per state.

Me: Cool. But is this the best way to represent 40 million people living in California?

Founding Father: (Spits out slave-prepared tea): There's HOW many people in WHAT!?

    2. It's the best way to protect the flyover states from the national agenda of the coastal states. It's never going to change. Embrace federalism and vote with your feet.

    3. And what is there to protect the coastal states from the treason state’s national agenda?

    4. Coastal states are protected by same constitution that is hard to amend. Just relax and find a state you can enjoy living in. Stop trying to nationalize everything. It will be just as hard for the R's to nationalize their social sgenda when they are in charge (the poltical pendulum will always swing back and forth).

  5. Too bad that he isn’t pulling fire alarms, or backing the terrorists in Gaza. Now THAT is the kind of leadership that we need.

  7. Existential question: Since Mike Johnson worked on papering over the failed Trump Coup- and expressly denies the election of Biden and Harris- is he President-in-his-own-mind now?
