Don't park at PDX, cont'd

I see that KOIN is staying on the story, which I first wrote about here nearly eight months ago, that car thieves are having a field day in the parking lots out at Portland Airport. Their latest report here sounds a lot like the one they did here.

After visiting family in Missouri last month, one couple flew back to PDX for a terrible homecoming. Their 2018 Kia Optima – once parked in the airport’s Red Lot – was nowhere to be found.

I don't have much to say that I didn't say the last time I looked at this debacle, other than it's a shame that the Port of Portland can't do its job.

Well, then, for the love of God, could we get a few bucks to put some cops in the parking lots?...  Get the auto theft situation in the parking lots down to zero. No "very targeted actions." Regular patrols, and plenty of them. No excuses.

If the Port cops at PDX can't keep your car safe, what else can't they keep safe out there? You probably don't want to know.

Sometimes those cops are busy sitting on the roadside with radar guns and giving out speeding tickets to travelers while the thieves are working the lots. Isn't that special? You start to wonder whether somebody at the Port of Portland is somehow making money off all the car theft they're allowing. But this is Oregon, so of course, no, that could never happen.

  1. Parking is a huge moneymaker for the Port, and they should easily be able to fund some additional patrols to cut down on the car theft. I have to wonder what they're spending money on that is more important than making sure the customers who are supporting the airport don't get their vehicles ripped off or broken into.

  2. So much money is wasted on fluffy PR at PDX. It’s sad that such a good airport can completely miss the crime underbelly that permeates the property.

  3. Thirty-two cars stolen from the PDX lots in Jan-Feb 2023 alone.

  4. The last time I flew into PDX & went to retrieve my car, there were two gangs of OBVIOUS doper types (twitchy, dirty, young, neck & face tattoos, tracksuits & backpacks, eyes on a jerky swivel) slinking through the parking lot, trying car doors. As I drove off I noticed a LOT of broken car window glass crystals on the asphalt in multiple places, & a car alarm sounding, followed by a second, then a woman screaming, far away.

  6. The Port of Portland Police park several cruisers on Airport Way with their parking lights on in order to create the illusion that they are conducting traffic patrols to reduce speeding. They rarely
move the cars meaning you can just ignore them and keep speeding or in this case keep on stealing cars.

  7. Do the thieves pay the parking fees when they drive the stolen cars out of the lot?

  8. Literally every single time I go out to the airport, there is always a police cruiser sitting under the overcrossing at Mount Hood Ave. Doesn't matter what time of day. Always sitting there in the median on Airport Way.

Oh, and one of my cars has a radar detector in it, and it stays mysteriously silent when going past.

Maybe if they're going to take a nap on a road somewhere, they could do it at one of the long term parking lots?
