An alert reader notes that the abrupt departure of REI from the retail scene in the City of Portland has one silver lining: It's provided the perfect slogan for the mayor's re-election campaign!

  1. I don’t think Ted is mentally agile enough to come up with that phrase. Like too many political figures, in current office, he relies of his staff to put words in his mouth.

    Of course, their friends in the media will run with it.

  3. Whoever is writing headlines at KGW is carrying a lot of water for the mayor's office. Sometimes in a negotiation, it's just time to walk away. The city was in no hurry to fix a terrible situation. It shouldn't take going to the media to get things to change. I wonder how many similar conversations are taking place with the city.

  4. 'Beyond Maddening' is the fact that the City of Portland's simply doesn't have the political capacity to address any of its significant problems. In fact, the only skills most of the current Councilors seem to possess are creating new problems and making existing ones even worse.
