Valediction

James Corden.

Moving here to America eight years ago, it was a huge leap for me and my family. My son was three, our daughter was 12 weeks old and we now have another small person, and she's American.

We started this show with Obama, then Trump, then a global pandemic, and I've watched America change a lot over these past eight years. I've watched divisions grow and I've seen and I've felt a sense of negativity grow and at points boil over.

And I guess all I really want to say tonight is, I implore you to remember what America signifies to the rest of the world.

My entire life, it has always been a place of optimism and joy, and yes it has flaws – so many. But show me a country that doesn't.

Just because somebody disagrees with you it doesn't make them bad or evil. We are all more the same than we are different, and there are so many people who are trying to stoke those differences, and we have to try as best we can to look for the light, look for the joy, because if you do it's out there.

And that's all this show has ever been about. All we've ever wanted is just be a little bit of light and levity at the end of your day. Thank you for letting me do this, thank you for letting me into your home every night.

  1. I agree. But, then I’m part of the choir he’s talking to.

  2. Until Trump drops dead I don't see anything changing. Our Hitler.

    1. Focusing on a cult of personality is how we got into this mess. Trump is the designated bad guy in their game of thrones. It is not real- they all party together and do other more nefarious things in dark corners.

  3. They are scared to Hell too many people are waking up to their game. So they keep turning up the fear machine. Stay cool as a cucumber.

  4. Well, just because you fell in love with a brand as a kid doesn’t mean it still represents or delivers what made you fall in love with it. America has wobbled about, but until recently you could deal with losses because the rules of the game were roughly level. But the seeds planted by Newt have grown into toxic fruit and now the GOPsters are simply dispensing with democracy in state after state, locking themselves in with such extreme gerrymanders and voting suppression work that the only elections that matter are GOP primaries. The recent NC decision is frightening and typical — they are simply going for frank and unabashed minority rule, heading back for the pre-civil rights act days. Similarly in NC and Wisconsin and others stripping power from Democratic governors who don’t have to worry about gerrymandering and thus get elected statewide.

So how do you have a federal system where there are a large number of states that have dispensed with democracy entirely? By locking themselves in and drawing gerrymandered Congressional districts, they are going to produce a national House of Representatives that is made up of “winners” who only won by computerized house-by-house gerrymandering and microtargeted social media disinformation — we’re all going to be in Margery Taylor Greene’s district in essence.

Cordon has it nice, he can always go back to the UK when the system flies apart here, but the rest of us don’t have it so lucky.

  5. One side will let themselves and all they know fall into oblivion as long as they get to hold onto their guns and own the libs on health care, and make Disney and Budweiser look bad (In their eyes). The other side wants decent control on fire arms, quality health care, and for people to live their lives without affecting others. Not sure there is a middle ground.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
