An alert reader points out that the REI store in northwest Portland is sporting some serious new plate glass to try to stop the otherwise out-of-control smash-and-grab madness going on all over town:

I looked it up; it's a real thing. For the merchants still brave enough to operate bricks-and-mortar retail in the Rose City, it's a logical, if no doubt expensive, option.
