Winners and losers so far

The first election results are in in Multnomah County. It appears Portland voters have bounced Jo Ann Hardesty from the City Council, but the hideous city charter change is passing, which means that we will have four of her on the council before long. Alas, Meieran is trailing for county chair, and all the bond foolishness is passing, of course.

At the state level, Kotek is way ahead, and so we will get the blue poison instead of the red.

In the Congressional races, both Salinas and JMS are way ahead for the Democrats, but shockigly, Val Hoyle is neck-and-neck with Skarlatos in DeFazioland! The Trumpies may pick up a second seat after all.

Overall, nothing to click anyone's heels about.

  1. Isn’t the 4th Congressional District deFazioland?

  2. People here like to complain about the state of things, but when it comes down to actually making real change they balk.

I really wouldn’t mind Tina’s politics so much, as we are accustomed to her “brand” already. I just can’t stand the thought of looking at her mug for four-plus years.

    1. I cannot think of a worse reason to oppose, or support, a politician.

  3. Is it realistic to suppose that every one of the forthcoming city "quadrants" will elect someone like Hardesty? She strikes me as rather a unique figure in Portland politics--after all, she was already pretty well known when she ran for the city council four years ago (think her years on KBOO, her time in the Oregon legislature, and her organizing work in the community). Hardesty actually did some good stuff during her four years on the city council, especially Portland Street Response, but she just wouldn't work collaboratively with her colleagues, and she refused (like others I have talked to) to recognize that the homelessness crisis was intimately connected to the spike in property crime and was largely driven by drug abuse. People like yours truly looked around at the tent camps and trash and graffiti and city dysfunction; we cleaned up after the transients sleeping on our front porches and in our back yards; and then listened to Hardesty making excuses for all that. So we decided it was time to say bye bye, Jo Ann.

    1. Problem is, any new potential candidates for any future council spots will look at the overall results of this election and figure that they can win by just saying the same things that got us here to begin with. There are no moderate or even slightly conservative thinkers left in this town. And if there are, they certainly are not going to gamble their reputations on a losing proposition that an election would eventually be.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
