Remember when we had antitrust laws?

The news for American consumers this morning is not good. As someone who patronizes neither Fred Meyer nor Albertson's, I won't be too directly affected. But combining the two isn't going to push prices down, that's for sure.

UPDATE, noon: Oops, I see that Safeway is part of the deal. What a disaster! But don’t worry, that Merrick Garland guy’s a real go-getter. Surely he will save us.

  1. Tiny towns like Newport only have Walmart, Fred Meyer, and Safeway. Minus the Safeway, we'd have just WM and FM for groceries. Both are giant crowded messes with little human help.

  2. Wasn't that many years ago KKK owned both Fred Meyer and Safeway.

  3. I doubt this will go through. I think that people at the moment have had enough of giant corporation worship. Kroger already ruined Freddie’s, I hope that Albertsons isn’t next. Please god.

    1. Honestly, I don't know whether it would degrade them or improve them. I agree that neither KKR nor Kroger has done anything to improve Fred's. The thing is, Kroger still suffers from Chaos, and now she's going to have her corrupt hands on the tiller at Albertsons/Safeway. I guess I'll have to off to Winco, or something. I won't set foot in a Walmart and New Seasons is too rich for my fixed income.

    2. You must excuse me, I remember and miss Kienow's, Tradewell, and Thriftway.

  4. I think we lost the Antitrust as a functional division at the DOJ sometime during the Reagan administration.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
