Guess where all the tents come from

If you're a hopeless drug addict anywhere west of the Mississippi, Portland's a mighty attractive place to move these days. Possession of a week's supply or more of hard street drugs isn't a crime – you just get a ticket that you never have to pay – and even if it were a crime, there are no cops to enforce the law anyway. And so you can live in a tent shooting up all you want, never having to worry about detoxing in a jail cell.

There is plenty of stuff to steal, and property crime is not prosecuted. If you wig out and start climbing through people's windows to sleep in their kids' beds, you may be picked up, but you'll be back on the street in a couple of hours.

This is the "humane," "progressive" Portland way. Welcome, junkies!

Okay, nothing new there. It's a familiar story by now. It's been this way for a couple of years.

But yesterday we learned that Multnomah County has been handing out free tents, tarps, and sleeping bags to enable people to do this.

It's so ridiculous, so sad. And yet the voters will re-elect those county commissioners again and again and again.

What we are doing here is not humane. Quite the opposite. Lazy, is what it is mostly.

  1. You can also get food stamps immediately without having an address. Yesterday, I watched a couple with a shopping cart piled high with bottled water poured all the water out so they could cash in the bottles at Trader Joe's.

    1. The bottled water thing is widespread. The deposits go for drugs.

    2. The first time that I saw this was about 20 years ago and I had no idea of what they were doing. Seems to me that there are easier ways to make a few bucks. Well you can’t say that they are not industrious.

I wish someone would come and take away my bottles and cans. I think I have enough here to buy a couple weeks of whatever their drug of choice is. And they don’t need to be emptied!

    3. They're a dime apiece now. Do the green bag program and give the money to your favorite cause.

    4. The problem is that we have so many that I have no appetite to dig in to start. And if I did, I would just keep the money for myself anyway because who doesn’t need a few extra dollars these days?

At this point I just want to wash my hands of them and recycle from here on out. If anyone is reading this and wants them, for whatever purpose, they are theirs for the taking. I’m serious.

  2. I hope they reserve a free tent for Hardesty.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
