OPB hops on the "magic barrel" bandwagon

So preposterous. And a free campaign ad for Jo Ann With the Bullhorn. They should know better.

  1. Really pathetic. Headline: "How environmental design is helping reduce gun violence in a Portland neighborhood." Near the end of the piece: "Though the pilot program saw results, it’s too early to draw a direct causal connection between these efforts and the reduction in gun violence."

  2. They might as well just put a pile of pine cones in the middle of the street. Same effect.

  3. As someone who lives in the area, I can say that the gunfire noise has abated. When the problem was at its worst and being much discussed around here, I was told by a trustworthy neighbor that the violence stemmed from the recent sale of a local convenience store. The new owner was using the store as a front for selling drugs, and a turf war had broken out. Presumably, the cops knew about this and have been able to do something about it. While it is impossible to rule out the barrels having had some mitigating effect, it appears good old fashioned cop shoe leather was the real solution to the problem.

  4. Traffic/ Aggressive Driving/ Noise. PBOT added candlesticks on each corner of the intersection of NE 42nd and Prescott. The already heavy trafficked road has increased traffic, noise and aggressive/ dangerous driving to the area by disallowing right-hand turns. This results in 4 blocks of cars idling waiting for a driver turning left. Daily horn honking, yelling, fast cuts through the mini-mart parking lot, etc. I do understand the pedestrian safety reasoning, but the result has actually made it less safe for drivers, bikers and pedestrians.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
