What the feds want from the Portland cop body cams

Here's a most interesting letter just made public. It's from the U.S. Department of Justice to the City of Portland regarding the impending deployment of body cameras by the police bureau. The DOJ is monitoring the city's wayward cops because they often have a problem respecting individuals' civil rights.

The whole letter is worth a read by anybody who's interested in the subject. But to me, the key passage relates to the police union demand that the officers get to look at the footage from the cams before they make up their story of what happened when they beat or kill somebody:

If there's one thing everyone agrees on, it's that the Portland cops can't be trusted as far as you can throw them. Let's hope the feds stay involved and get us a reasonable system for using the cameras.

  1. Bet it'll be next summer at earliest before Portland gets cameras on police.

    1. If the union doesn't get its way, it will drag on a looooong time.

    2. Agreed. Instead of putting bodycams on police immediately last summer, the city did a great many counterproductive things which we will reap the dubious benefits of for a decade.

The platform used for this blog is awfully wonky when it comes to comments. It may work for you, it may not. It's a Google thing, and beyond my control. Apologies if you can't get through. You can email me a comment at jackbogsblog@comcast.net, and if it's appropriate, I can post it here for you.
