Well, here we are again, sitting in stunned silence as another group of innocent people lie dead at the hands of a moron with his assault weapon. Such a familiar place. This country is turning out to be a spectacular failure in so many ways.

The instinct a lot of people have is to want to call somebody. I have a friend who was calling his congressperson, Jaime Herrera Beutler, after every mass shooting. He ran up quite a phone bill. I don't know if he's still doing it.

Some say to call the NRA, or the local chapter, and rant at them about the blood on their hands. But what's the use? They don't care. Or they're too dumb to understand. Or both.

If I were to call somebody, I'd pick a person who should know better. Someone like Kurt Schrader, the DINO congressman from Salem who's soft on gun control because he has no spine. If I was going to make my voice heard, it would be to a guy like that. The blood is on his hands, too.

Come to think of it, maybe Herrera Beutler would be a good person to call right now. She's the new darling of the New York Times. She doesn't need the Trump vote. Or so she says. Maybe she could be persuaded to do, or at least to say, something sensible about the gun cancer.

And then there are the geniuses in Oregon state government. That sweetheart Tina Kotek. Those innovative, energetic workhorses, Ginny Burdick and Peter Courtney. Our beloved governor, Killer Kate. How on earth can Oregon, a one-party state, blue as blue can be, not have the strictest gun control laws in the country?

We can call. Or we can just keep on sitting and staring. Because you would think that if anything good were going to happen with this, it would have happened by now.
